Environmental Services supports the protection and stewardship of Syilx lands, waters, and cultural values through: 

• Fisheries management 

• Cultural heritage protection 

• Environmental monitoring 

• The Indigenous Guardian Program.  

The department works to ensure that tmixʷ (all living things) and culturally significant places are protected for future generations.

This program works to reduce wildfire threats to communities, cultural values, infrastructure, and ecosystems through fuel management, community preparedness, training, and landscape restoration. Our Wildfire Risk Reduction program integrates syilx knowledge and stewardship principles to build healthier, more resilient forests.

The BC Hydro Project supports OKIB’s involvement in hydroelectric operations and reservoir management within syilx territory. We focus on environmental stewardship, cultural heritage protection, fisheries monitoring, community engagement, and ensuring Indigenous interests are represented in ongoing BC Hydro activities.

The Research Department manages confidential research, data collection, mapping, and information analysis to support OKIB governance, stewardship, planning, and decision-making. Research activities help advance community priorities while ensuring Indigenous knowledge and sensitive information are protected and appropriately managed.

The Referrals Department reviews proposed land and resource activities within syilx territory to identify potential impacts to Aboriginal rights, title, cultural heritage, environmental values, and community interests. We provide technical analysis and recommendations to support informed decision-making and stewardship.
