Today, November 8th is National Aboriginal Veterans Day. A Day to honour our veterans who have served and those that continue to serve.
Nk’maplqs was unique in the sense that our community had extremely high rates of enlistment in World War One as well as further enlistment in World War Two. Many saw service in Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Scottland, England, France and Belgium. The fact that so many syilx men and women chose to serve and protect their communities is a testament to our determination and courage as people.
Outside of both world wars, our people have continued to serve, in Korea, Vietnam and even in modern conflicts such as Desert storm. Today Okanagan Indian Band would like to honour their courage and remember their service.
