Housing Safety & Suitability Program

The CFS Housing Safety and Suitability Program has been created to help OKIB families ensure their homes are safe, healthy, and suitable for children. The program provides funding support for essential repairs, renovations, or additions to primary residences on OKIB reserve lands.

This work is part of OKIB’s commitment to supporting children and families by addressing housing needs that could affect safety and stability in the home.

Deadline for applications is: December 19, 2025

Application Process

The program is open to OKIB members who:
– Own their home on OKIB reserve lands, and
– Have children living in the home, visiting regularly, or are working toward reunification.

Projects that improve child safety and well-being will be prioritized. This may include urgent repairs such as fixing a leaking roof, unsafe electrical wiring, plumbing failures, or heating systems that don’t work. The program can also support essential renovations like replacing doors and windows, addressing mould, or making homes more accessible. In some cases, non-urgent work like adding a bedroom to prevent overcrowding may also be considered.

Once applications are submitted, they are reviewed by a committee that includes Child and Family Services, Public Works & Housing, and an Elder representative. This group uses clear criteria to decide which projects move forward, giving priority to families with urgent safety concerns and the greatest financial need.

If your application is approved, OKIB will hire and pay the contractor directly once the work is completed and verified. Families are not required to repay these funds.

The application package is available online (below) and at the CFS office. You’ll need to provide proof of home ownership, proof of child residency, household income information, and any quotes or photos related to the work you’re requesting.
